It is more familiar than the Swiss cross. it adorns countless
postcards and chocolate boxes and, as a symbol of Swit-
zerland, it even leaves Swiss cheese and the Alphorn in the
shade - that's the Matterhorn for you - and the fact that it
has become a trade mark has in no way detracted from its
dignity.
In 1865, the Englishman, Whymper, was the first to set foot
on its summit. Granted that at 14,690 feet. the Matterhorn
is only the fourth highest mountain in Europe but its
impressive, pyramid-shape most certainly makes it the
archetype of all Alpine peaks
