Europe's Highest Point:
Montblanc

At 4807 metres above sea level Montblanc is the highest mountain in Europe. Along with Mont Maudit (4465 metres), Mont Blanc du Tacul (4242 metres) and Dôme du Goûter (4304 metres) it crowns the mightiest massif of the curve of the Alps. The Frenchmen, M.G. Piccard and J. Balmet. were the first to conquer it in 1786, thereby laying the foundation of alpinism. This was followed by alpine tourism and the dense settlement of the mountain valleys around Chamonix and Courmayeur. After the road tunnel broke through the former tremendous barrier in 1965, the symphony of rock and ice became a perfect attraction for people from far and near.
