deutsch      english      français      italiano

To the Tibetans it is the "Mother-goddess of the World", to the Nepalese the "Head of Heaver". Mount Everest, at 8848 metres the highest mountain in the world. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to stand on its peak, in 1953. Mount Everest is the crown of the Himalavas.. This mountain chain, with an average crest height of 6000 meters the greatest in the world, was created as a result of the collision between the former continental plates of Eurasia and India. Today Mount Everest thus stands, as the highest watch-tower in the world, on this natural wall which separates the dry climate of Central Asia from the moist climate of the Monsoon countries.
