To the Tibetans it is the "Mother-goddess of the World", to
the Nepalese the "Head of Heaver". Mount Everest, at
8848 metres the highest mountain in the world. Sir
Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to stand
on its peak, in 1953. Mount Everest is the crown of the
Himalavas.. This mountain chain, with an average crest
height of 6000 meters the greatest in the world, was created
as a result of the collision between the former continental
plates of Eurasia and India. Today Mount Everest thus
stands, as the highest watch-tower in the world, on this
natural wall which separates the dry climate of Central
Asia from the moist climate of the Monsoon countries.
